Cappadocia fairy chimney collapse kills two locals, a tourist
Baku, October 29, AZERTAC
The death toll rose to three after a third body was recovered from beneath the collapsed fairy chimney in Goreme, Nevsehir Governor Huseyin Kok announced, according to Türkiye Today. Two of the victims are Turkish citizens and one is a tourist.
Two people were killed and one was injured Thursday when rocks broke off a fairy chimney and fell near the Goreme Open-Air Museum in Türkiye’s Cappadocia region.
The incident took place after heavy rain triggered a landslide, Nevsehir Governor Huseyin Kok announced.
Police, gendarmerie, disaster agency AFAD and health teams were dispatched to the site in the town of Goreme, and search and rescue work is continuing.
“As of 3:15 p.m. today, there was a landslide caused by excessive rainfall,” Kok told reporters at the scene.
“As a result of rockfall caused by the landslide in Goreme town of Nevsehir province, we have unfortunately reached the bodies of two people as of now, and we have sent one injured person to the hospital,” he said.
“Our search and rescue efforts continue at the scene. Our state continues its work at the scene with all its means,” the governor added.
Rocks that broke off the fairy chimney because of the downpour fell onto an area where people were present. Teams determined that two people had died after being trapped under the rocks.
The injured person was taken to a hospital in the city.
