EU OFFICE IN AZERBAIJAN CELEBRATES LISBON TREATY
Baku, 15 December (AZERTAC). The office of the European Union in Azerbaijan hosted a ceremony to mark the new EU`s Lisbon Treaty.
Head of the office Roland Kobia said the treaty was drawn up to streamline decision-making in the EU, and is a watered-down version of a draft EU constitution rejected four years ago.
The reforms in the European Union will positively influence on EU-Azerbaijan relations and open new opportunities for cooperation, Mr. Kobia said.
The treaty was signed in Lisbon summit, on December 13, 2007 and came into force on December 1, 2009. It would create two major new posts: a new European Council president who would serve a term of two-and-a-half years, and a new foreign policy chief whose role would combine those of the existing foreign affairs representative and external affairs commissioner. In addition, the treaty will alter voting procedures, with national vetoes to become the exception rather than the rule in most policy areas.
Belgium ex Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy was appointed the EU`s first permanent president for a five-year term.
The even brought together head of socio and political department of Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov, MPs and ambassadors of the foreign countries.
