“Global action for healthy communities without drugs” conference held in Baku
Baku, July, 19 (AZERTAC). “Global action for healthy communities without drugs” conference was held in Baku.
The action supported by National Anti-Drug Propaganda Public Association was attended by officials of the state and government, members of the State Commission for Fighting Against Drug Addiction and Illicit Drugs Trafficking, Members of Milli Majlis, representatives of diplomatic corps of the international organizations operating in Azerbaijan, the law enforcement agencies, the relevant structures and NGOs.
Mezahir Efendiyev, head of the National Anti-Drug Propaganda Public Association noted that according to reports of the United Nations today about 250 million people suffer from drugs or other similar means in the world. It makes about 5 percent of the world’s population at the age from 15 till 64 years.
Our country together with the international public, the leading countries of the world carries out about 20 years consecutive and purposeful work on the solution of this problem. Today, the Azerbaijani government, especially law enforcement bodies reached serious successes in this sphere. Tons of narcotic substances were withdrawn and destroyed.
Chairman of the MM committee on legal policy and state construction Ali Huseynli noted that fight against drug addiction should be carried out steadily and consistently. It is the work of the states, the society, and each citizen. Fight against drug addiction in Azerbaijan never was a campaign. In this regard, the state has clearly expressed its political will. Drug addiction is such problem which very quickly adapts for existing conditions.
Mr. Huseynli emphasized that in Azerbaijan the new stage of reforms in the sphere of fight against drug addiction began about 7-8 years ago.
Having noted that fight against drug addiction in Azerbaijan is always controlled by the state, civil society and law enforcement bodies, he said that the parliament constantly supports all legislative reforms which are carried out in the sphere of fight against drug addiction.
Ambassador of Romania to Azerbaijan Daniel Christian Chiobanu noted that drugs have negative impact around the world. For this reason, global and joint fight against this evil is necessary and important.
Highly appreciating the measures undertaken to fight against illicit drug trafficking in Azerbaijan, the ambassador said that in the country there is solid legislative base on fight against illicit drug trafficking.
Plato Nozadze, the UN Office expert on Drugs and Combating Crime (UNODC) to Azerbaijan delivered the World Report on drugs for 2012 prepared by structure represented by him.
Head of the National Anti-Drug Propaganda Public Association Mezahir Efendiyev presented the National Report for 2012.
