U.S. TO SEND ARMED PATRIOT BATTERY TO POLAND, POLISH FM

Baku, 5 December (AZERTAC). U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that the Patriot missiles to be sent to Poland will be combat ready, Poland`s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on Friday after his meeting with Clinton in Brussels during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

“The U.S. assured us that the Patriots will be in the configuration which suits us and which we have requested: not only armed but also able to be included in our anti-aircraft defense system,” Sikorski was quoted as saying by the Polish news agency PAP.

Director of the international security department in the Pentagon Alexander Vershbow told the PAP on Wednesday that in the fist stage, until 2012, Poland will receive unarmed missiles, and later armed Patriots will be delivered. Poland`s government has insisted on armed missiles to be sent.

Sikorski said that he discussed a number of issues with Clinton, who thanked Poland for its decision to send 600 more troops to Afghanistan. The U.S. secretary of state also confirmed plans to visit Poland next year for ceremonies marking the 10th anniversary of Community of Democracies.
