7th Turcology Summer School wraps up at Garabagh University

Baku, August 19, AZERTAC

The 7th Turcology Summer School, jointly organized by the International Turkic Academy and the Turkish Academy of Sciences, has concluded at Garabagh University.

The primary objective of the summer school was to strengthen the scientific potential of young scholars in the field of Turkology, promote mutual knowledge and experience exchange among participants from various countries, and facilitate the learning of modern academic approaches and practical research methods.

The weeklong program brought together 32 young scholars and doctoral students from Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and North Macedonia. Throughout the summer school, participants engaged in intensive lectures and training sessions across various branches of Turkology, including linguistics, literary studies, history, ethnography, and cultural research. The sessions were conducted by 15 renowned scholars and experts invited from five countries: Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

In addition to academic lectures, participants shared scientific approaches and research experiences relevant to their specific areas of Turkology, engaging in scholarly discussions. The event aimed to contribute to strengthening existing scientific ties among participating countries and fostering a shared academic future for the Turkic world.

Hosting the summer school in the city of Khankendi, as well as the active involvement of Karabakh University’s faculty and doctoral staff, added special significance to this 7th iteration of the program. The event also served as an opportunity to showcase the university’s growing scientific activity on an international level.

Among the notable speakers, Dr. Elchin Ibrahimov, Head of the Scientific Department at Karabakh University and Doctor of Philology, delivered a lecture on "The Common Alphabet Problem in the Turkic World," while Ajdar Babazade, Head of the Azikh Archaeological Research and Analysis Laboratory, presented on “The Role of Karabakh’s Paleoecosystem in Human Evolution.” Two of the university’s doctoral researchers also participated in the program.

Additionally, the participants took part in a cultural tour, visiting Shusha and the historic Isa Spring, where they explored Azerbaijan’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

The program also featured an academic competition between nine teams named after symbolic figures and elements of Turkic heritage: “Dede Gorgud,” “Manas,” “Orkhon-Yenisei,” “Oghuz,” “Altai,” “Alpamish,” “Khazar,” “Gokturk,” and “Turan.” The “Gokturk” team secured first place, followed by “Manas” in second and “Dede Gorgud” in third. Winners were awarded certificates of achievement.

At the conclusion of the summer school, all participants received joint certificates issued by Karabakh University, the International Turkic Academy, and the Turkish Academy of Sciences.

The opening ceremony of the 7th Turcology Summer School took place on August 11. During the ceremony, Rector of Karabakh University Shahin Bayramov, President of the International Turkic Academy Shahin Mustafayev, and President of the Turkish Academy of Sciences Muzaffer Şeker highlighted the importance of the summer school and expressed their gratitude to the leadership of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan for its organizational support.

The Turcology Summer School was previously held in Türkiye, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. Karabakh University plans to continue this tradition by implementing joint projects with the International Turkic Academy and the Turkish Academy of Sciences to further research, promote, and preserve the common heritage of the Turkic world.
