Plovdiv named European Capital of Sport for 2028

Baku, October 30, AZERTAC

Plovdiv has been named European Capital of Sport for 2028, Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov told reporters on Friday after the Municipality received official notification from the evaluation committee.

Dimitrov said the priority was to encourage more children to take part in physical activities, strengthen links between schools and sports clubs, and build additional facilities for public use. The Municipality will also invite bids for the construction of 14 sports grounds near residential areas. Dimitrov said all sports currently receive municipal support, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported.

The designation will also bring greater attention to the Rowing Canal, described by the mayor as the largest sports complex in the Balkans, and to Plovdiv Stadium. Dimitrov said the Municipality had a development plan for the stadium, details of which would be announced at a later stage.

A structural survey found that the stadium did not need to be demolished but could instead be reinforced, he said. The city needs a space where sport and culture can be developed together, Dimitrov added.
