81 dead as heavy rains, flooding hit India's Uttar Pradesh

At least 81 people were killed and 62 others injured as heavy rains triggered flooding and widespread damage during the past three days in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Xinhua reported citing local media Monday.
"The death toll from incessant monsoon showers across Uttar Pradesh rose to 81 over three days, with 25 more fatalities reported on Sept. 27 after 56 deaths were recorded during Sept. 25 and 26," a local newspaper Times of India quoted Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod as having said.
All India Radio (AIR) said on Monday that officials have been instructed to conduct relief operations in the affected areas.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and rain at many places in the eastern and western districts of the state on Monday.
"In view of the inclement weather, a holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in several districts, including Amroha, Shravasti, Pilibhit and Bijnor," AIR said.
