ASTANA HOSTING UNWTO GENERAL ASSEMBLY`S 18th SESSION
Baku, October 7 (AZERTAC). Delegates representing 112 countries are attending the 18th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization`s General Assembly underway in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The session has been solemnly inaugurated by President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev who said his country sees "a chance to emerge as a prime tourism destination in the Euro-Asia region."
The gathering set the ground for how the travel and tourism sector can face the current economic downturn while staying on track with the twin challenges of climate change response and poverty alleviation.
Tourism Ministers and senior officials from National Tourism Organizations around the world, as well as public, private and academic Affiliate Members, discussed the UNWTO Roadmap for Recovery, which is at the centre of the general debate of this Assembly.
Other key issues addressed during the session include the facilitation of tourist travel, pandemic preparedness in the framework of Influenza A(H1N1), and technical cooperation to promote sustainable development through travel and tourism.
“Astana LEASURE 2009” exhibition was also held as a part of the session.
Head of Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Ministry`s Tourism Department Aydin Ismiyev, Chief of the Division of Research Works, Statistics and Licensing Mahir Gahramanov and representatives of the Azeri embassy attended at the event.
