AZERI PARLIAMENT`s SPEAKER MEETS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN JEWISH COMMITTEE
Baku, July 5 (AZERTAC). Speaker of the Azerbaijan Milli Majlis, Ogtay Asadov has met today Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) David A. Harris.
Asadov said Azerbaijan and the United States were strategic partners. He noted Azerbaijan actively cooperates with the U.S. in fight against international terrorism.
According to the Speaker, reciprocal visits by the two countries` officials contribute to deepening bilateral relationship.
Asadov also praised the support of the American Jewish Committee for the Azerbaijani Diaspora in the U.S. He pointed out Jews who settled in Azerbaijan centuries ago live in peace.
Asadov also stressed Israel was one of the countries to recognize Azerbaijan`s independence.
The Speaker briefed Harris on the ongoing reforms in his country. He said Azerbaijan was interested in establishing comprehensive cooperation with all countries of the world, and the country plays great role in development of the region. “But the fact that the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict still remains unresolved hinders security and development of the region,” he added.
For his part, Harris said he saw significant changes in Azerbaijan since his last visit to the country two years ago.
He hailed the fact that Azerbaijan had made accomplishments while the U.S. faces the global financial crisis.
He also highly appreciated the tolerance in Azerbaijan.
Harris noted Azerbaijan was an important country for the U.S.
The sides also discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation between the Diaspora organizations and other issues of mutual interest.
Present in the meeting were head of the Milli Majlis Administration Safa Mirzayev, MP Yevda Abramov and other officials.
