Azerbaijan takes part in UN Security Council elections
New York, October 21 (AZERTAC). Today the United Nations member countries in the Oganization`s Headquarters in New York by voting in General Assembly will elect new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council - the most authoritative structure of the world which are responsible for international peace and stability. From 15 Security Council members five - China, France, Russia, Great Britain and the USA are permanent members and have the veto. The other 10 places are distributed between non-permanent members who are elected for a period of two years.
For election in non-permanent members of Security Council for 2012-2013s in Friday elections will take part nine countries. For representation of Africa and Asian-Pacific region the participants will vote for nominees of Kyrgyzstan, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo, for representation of the Eastern Europe - for Azerbaijan, Hungary and Slovenia, for Latin America and the Caribbean Islands - for the nominee of Guatemala.
The won country should receive voices of two thirds of member countries of the United Nations. The new non-permanent members will replace Gabon, Lebanon, Nigeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Brazil in Security Council, and will take their powers in 2012-2013s. They in Security Council, along with permanent members, will join the non-permanent members whose membership will come to an end late 2012 - that is, Colombia, Germany, Portugal and the Republic of South Africa.
