Azerbaijan`s deputy FM holds meetings in Spain
Baku, November 30 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s delegation led by deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Khalaf Khalafov visited Spain on November 27-29.
During the visit political consultations were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation with State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Gonzalo de Benito. Khalafov said great opportunities exist to boost relationship between Azerbaijan and Spain. He particularly underscored the necessity of speeding up cooperation in educational, scientific, energy and economic spheres.
An agreement on cooperation between Azerbaijan and Spain in cultural, educational and scientific areas was signed during the visit.
Khalafov said the document would give impetus to strengthening Azerbaijan-Spain relationship. The sides also discussed draft agreements to be signed in the future. They said participation of Spanish businessmen in major projects in Azerbaijan would be important for development of bilateral cooperation.
Gonzalo de Benito stressed Spain`s support for strengthening relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union.
As part of the visit, Khalafov also met chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Spanish Senate, Alejandro Munoz-Alonso Ledo. They praised relations between legislative bodies of the two countries.
Alejandro Munoz-Alonso Ledo said Spain was interested in development of cooperation with Azerbaijan. He also underlined the importance of opening the Spanish embassy in Azerbaijan.
Khalafov spoke of the geopolitical situation of Azerbaijan, the country`s increasing role in South Caucasus and Caspian regions, as well as Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The deputy minister said the status quo in the conflict was a source of threat to peace and stability in the region.
Alejandro Munoz-Alonso Ledo noted Spain supports Azerbaijan`s just position on settlement of the conflict.
As part of the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation also met rector of Diplomatic School of Spain Jose Luis de la Pena Vela and director of the International Department of La Moncloa, Ildefonso Castro.
According to Castro, the Spanish government is interested in development of relations, particularly economic cooperation with Azerbaijan, which, he added, is important for Europe.
