BOMBING AT TAJIK POLICE STATION WOUNDS 16

Baku, September 3 (AZERTAC). Tajik officials say a bomb blast at a police station in northern Tajikistan has wounded at least 16 people.

Officials say a suicide car bomber apparently rammed his vehicle into the building Friday in the city of Khojand. They say the blast triggered a fire in the building, which houses a police unit dedicated to fighting organized crime.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Tajikistan has been on high alert since 25 Islamic militants escaped from a prison in the capital, Dushanbe, on August 23 after killing several prison guards.

Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon fired his top security official Thursday in an apparent response to the prison break.

Only one of the escaped inmates has been caught.
