DEFENSE MINISTER MEETS ROMANIAN COUNTERPART
Minister Safar Abiyev pointed out that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s official visit to Romania in October, 2004 gave the powerful impetus to further development of the Azerbaijan-Romania relationship. “We attach great importance to enhancing cooperation with Romania in all fields including the military one,” he said.
Touching on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, the Minister noted Azerbaijan is committed to its peaceful resolution based on international legal norms and territorial integrity of the country. “This is our resolute stance; unless the talks yield fruit, we will resort to other means,” he said.
Romania National Defense Minister Teodor Anastasiu expressed confidence that his visit would promote deepening cooperation between the two countries. He noted it is very important to his country that peace and stability be ensured in the Black and Caspian Sea regions. “Romania is taking steps to draw more international attention to the conflicts taking place in the region, and for them to be settled in the framework of the international law,” he said.
The parties also exchange views on the current situation in the South Caucasus and Black Sea region, combat against international terrorism, integration into EuroAtlantic security structures and other issues.
Defense Ministers Safar Abiyev of Azerbaijan and Teodor Anastasiu signed the following documents: Agreement between the Government of Azerbaijan and the Government of Romania on Military Cooperation, Agreement between the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan and National Defense Ministry of Romania on Protection of the Sensitive Military Information Exchanged, and Additional Protocol on Amendments to the Protocol on Cooperation on Military Training signed between Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan and National Defense Ministry of Romania on February 15, 2000 in Baku .
The Ministers then answered questions from journalists.
