HUMAN RIGHT ACTIVISTS DISCUSS SITUATION IN AZERBAIJAN
Baku, September 11 (AZERTAC). Visiting representatives of human rights groups have held a meeting at the office of Azerbaijani Ombudsman.
The delegation includes members of Article XiX, Freedom House, International Journalists Federation, Open Society Foundation and other organizations.
Leader of the delegation Agnes Callamard said the aim of the visit is to learn more about protection of rights of journalists, freedom of speech.
Head of the Ombudsman`s Office Safikhanly told of the cooperation with international organizations to protect human rights. He pointed out the National Action plan on human rights is being implemented in the country. He added the State Support Foundation for Media was created in the country and financial assistance was provided to media outlets.
The guests inquired about the situation of journalists in the country, protection of media rights and expressed concern over arresting journalists E. Fatullayev and young bloggers.
Safikhanly pointed out the ombudsman office`s representatives met many times with arrested journalists to learn about their situation and how they are treated.
The importance of observing journalistic ethics and spreading accurate information was highlighted during the meeting.
319 prisoners have been pardoned so far in line with petition of the ombudsman. A number of journalists were released as well.
It was stressed that commissioner for human rights keeps the situation of bloggers Hajizade and Milli in focus of attention and met with them a few times. The ombudsman applied to the Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General to deal with this case impartially.
The final event held by representatives of the human right organizations was attended by Ombudsman Office`s employees.
