Media briefing on WUF13 preparations held

Baku, February 27, AZERTAC

A media briefing was held to outline progress on preparations for the Thirteenth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), which is set to take place in Baku from 17 to 22 May 2026.

Briefing participants received the latest updates on the preparations, along with an introduction to the WUF13 website and the Central Accommodation Reservation Platform.

Speaking at the media briefing, Gulshan Rzayeva, Deputy National Coordinator of WUF13 and Deputy Chief of Staff of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, highlighted that declaring 2026 the “Year of Urban Planning and Architecture”, alongside Azerbaijan’s hosting of WUF13, form part of a unified strategic approach. These initiatives offer a significant and unique opportunity to present the country’s urban development priorities on the international stage, draw global attention to the region, and turn dialogue into tangible, lasting results.

She stressed that, for the first time in the history of the World Urban Forum, housing and urban development issues will be discussed at the highest political level in Baku - a step that will strengthen their position on the global agenda and promote a more systematic approach to decision-making in this field. Gulshan Rzayeva added that the WUF13 will not be merely a platform for declarations, but a forum centred on implementation, partnerships and tangible actions in the fields of housing and urban sustainability.

Edlam Yemeru, Director of the Global Knowledge and Advocacy Division at UN-Habitat, highlighted the theme of WUF13 — “Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities” — noting that the Forum will shine a spotlight on the global housing crisis affecting nearly 3 billion people, including more than 1.1 billion living in informal settlements and slums. She also stressed the significance of 2026 for the global urban agenda: “This year, the World Urban Forum will be more than a conference. We will mark 10 years since the adoption of the New Urban Agenda and review progress on SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities. It will be an opportunity to take stock of where we stand and agree on actions to accelerate progress.”

Speaking at the event, Kanan Guluzade, Advisor to the Chairman of the State Tourism Agency, said that Azerbaijan has a strong track record in hosting major international events as part of its business tourism offering, and that the country’s tourism sector - including its hotels - stands ready to welcome guests.

He added that further steps are planned to raise service standards across accommodation facilities, alongside dedicated training programmes for catering providers operating both within such facilities and independently.

Kanan Guluzade also outlined the Agency’s plans for WUF13, including a panel session entitled ‘Transforming Heritage Sites through Community-Based Tourism’ and the installation of a national tourism stand in the exhibition area.

A video was screened outlining the full scope of key operational preparations for WUF13, including construction and installation works currently under way at the official venue, the Baku Olympic Stadium.

During the media briefing, the host country’s website (www.wuf13.az) was also unveiled. Developed in Azerbaijani and English, the digital platform will serve as the main point of reference for those planning to attend the global event in Baku in May 2026.

The website enables users to access essential logistical information, including visa procedures, accommodation and transport, while also serving as an interactive digital resource showcasing Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage and urban development history. In the “Our Urban Trace” section, visitors can explore the country’s urban planning legacy, while the “Treasures of Azerbaijan” section provides detailed insights into Azerbaijan’s architecture and natural heritage.

It was noted that the website has been developed in line with recognised inclusivity standards and incorporates built-in features to ensure it is fully accessible and user-friendly for all visitors, including those with physical disabilities.

During the briefing, the official WUF13 Central Accommodation Reservation Platform offering a range of lodging options for participants travelling to Azerbaijan - https://accommodation.wuf13.az - was presented.

The platform enables attendees to plan their stay with ease and without incurring additional fees. It provides fixed accommodation rates, airport meet-and-greet services, as well as the organisation of daily transfers. The centralised reservation system offers a broad selection to suit all budgets, ranging from one-star to five-star hotels and rental apartments. At present, the platform features more than 60 hotels and accommodation facilities.

Further details about the Thirteenth Session of the World Urban Forum are available at www.wuf13.az.

As the leading international platform for dialogue and cooperation in the field of urban development, bringing together broad global participation, WUF13 will be held in Baku from 17 to 22 May 2026 under the theme “Housing the World: Safe and Resilient Cities and Communities”. Through this event, participants will have the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience, establish institutional partnerships, and contribute to the global urban agenda.
