POWERFUL WINDS CAUSE DAMAGE IN EASTERN REGIONS OF LATVIA
Baku, August 9 (AZERTAC). Powerful winds caused significant damage across eastern areas of Latvia yesterday, tearing roofs off houses, upending trees, and leaving the majority of the town of Madona without electricity, according to LETA.
State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) spokeswoman Inese Veisa informed LETA that information had been received about damage in the city of Daugavpils, as well as in the towns of Preili and Madona.
Most callouts were connected with trees which had been felled by the storms, while complaints were also received about electricity blackouts, and in Daugavpils tram power lines were also damaged.
According to Veisa, many of the affected areas experienced very sudden and short periods of high winds.
Inhabitants of the town of Madona informed LETA that the roofs had been torn off at least two residential apartment buildings, and that the electricity supply had been cut off to most of the town.
One of the roofs was blown onto adjacent land surrounding a kindergarten.
High winds also blew the roof off the shop “Beta”, and damaged several private homes.
Further disruption was caused in Madona and Daugavpils by the number of trees which had been blown over onto roads, blocking traffic.
Car windscreens were also broken during the storms, billboards were damaged, and electric lines blown over.
The SFRS has not received any information about any human injury.
