RUSSIA, NORWAY SIGN MARITIME AREAS DELIMITATION TREATY
Baku, September 15 (AZERTAC). Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called the signing of a Russian-Norwegian treaty on maritime delimitation in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean a “historic event”, Itar-Tass reports.
“Today we witnessed the signing of a historic document,” Medvedev said at a joint news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. “We have been moving towards this treaty for 40 years. It is a big time span, but this event should open up a new page in the bilateral relations,” he stressed.
“This event will have an impact on the entire situation in the region, strengthening international and regional security, promoting cooperation among Arctic states,” the Russian president noted.
In his words, the mere fat that the main unsettled issue of the recent decades has been removed from the agenda will promote more constructive and predictable relations.
The treaty, Medvedev noted, clearly spells out jurisdictions in the region where the two countries have overlapping interests. The treaty will boost the potential of Russian-Norwegian cooperation in the energy and transport sectors.
Medvedev also said that during his meeting with the Norwegian prime minister they had discussed issues of environment protection, nuclear and radiation security.
The Russian president thanked the Norwegian side for their help in the construction of a boarding school for young athletes in the North Caucasian town of Beslan. “It was a good present for the new academic year and a vivid example of the friendship between our states,” he noted.
