UN SUMMIT AIMS TO REDUCE POVERTY, HUNGER AND DISEASE

Baku, September 21 (AZERTAC). World leaders are meeting at the United Nations in a three-day summit with the goal of finding a way to end poverty, hunger and disease around the globe within the next five years.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon opened the Millennium Development Goals summit Monday, calling on the international community to honor the promises made at another summit 10 years ago.

Mr. Ban reminded his audience of world leaders that they committed themselves to end extreme poverty and hunger worldwide, without any delay due to economic or financial crises in donor nations.

The Secretary-General said, “We should not balance budgets on the backs of the poor.”

Presidents and prime ministers from 140 countries are attending the summit, which U.S. President Barack Obama will address before the meeting concludes on Wednesday.
