Vienna hosts 31st conference of European justice ministries
Baku, September 25 (AZERTAC). The 31st conference of European justice ministries was co-organized on September 19-21 in Vienna by the Council of Europe and Austrian government.
Azerbaijani delegation led by justice minister Fikrat Mammadov participated in the event.
The conference was opened by Austrian justice minister Beatrix Karl and CoE`s deputy secretary general Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni.
The event, held on the theme of “Responses of justice to urban violence”, focused on a wide range of issues, including improvement of legislation to prevent crime, organized groups and their new ways of communicating, juveniles as perpetrators and victims.
Azerbaijan`s justice minister Fikrat Mammadov addressed the event, highlighting the reforms held in the country under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev to improve legal mechanisms. The minister also drew the attention to the fact that the rights of more than one million people, including hundreds of thousands of children were brutally violated in the wake of Armenia`s military aggression against Azerbaijan. The minister also put forward concrete proposals.
A report drawn up by the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) on analysis of judicial systems of European countries was prepared at the conference. The presentation ceremony was attended by justice ministries of three countries from Europe - Austria, France and Azerbaijan. Speaking at the event Fikrat Mammadov highlighted the results of legal reforms carried out in his country.
The report praised large scale judicial reforms carried out in Azerbaijan.
The presentation ceremony was followed by a press conference. Azerbaijan`s justice minister gave interviews to Turkish mass media.
As part of the conference a “roundtable meeting” was held on fight against corruption. Director of Austria-based International Anti-Corruption Academy addressed the event. The severe fight against corruption in Azerbaijan under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev was taken into consideration and the country became a full member of the International Anti-Corruption Academy.
The Azerbaijani delegation visited the Academy to meet its officials.
The conference culminated in adoption of a resolution.
The Armenian side tried to include the issue on extradition and pardon of Ramil Safarov in agenda of the conference, but as a result of the Azerbaijani delegation`s protest this effort failed. The Armenian side also distributed statement among participants saying that pardon of Ramil Safarov contradicts European legislation. But the Azerbaijani delegation issued a statement saying that the extradition and pardon of Ramil Safarov fully corresponds to European convention. The attention of the conference participants was also drawn to terror threats of Armenian terrorist organization ASALA against Azerbaijanis.
As part of the visit, issues related to cooperation were discussed with justice ministers of several countries and high-level officials of the Council of Europe.
