WUF13 highlights citizen engagement as essential pillar of sustainable urban development

An event titled “Strengthening Urban Resilience through Citizen Engagement and Strategic Communication” was held in Baku as part of WUF13.
The event, delivered through a presentation by Torakhnim Nasrullayeva, a lecturer at the Baku Military College under the National Defense University, focused on the role of communication and citizen engagement in the development of sustainable cities.
Nasrullayeva described communication as a key tool for building trust, public participation, and sustainable urban communities, stressing that cooperation is not possible without it. She highlighted the “Baku White City” project, global housing challenges, and noted that citizen participation, digital tools, and data-driven approaches improve urban governance, transparency, and policy quality.
During the event, participants also engaged in interactive discussions on the role of digital communication tools in housing policy and urban planning.
It was emphasized in conclusion that active citizen participation and greater investment in communication systems are key to building sustainable cities.
