30 Cars will premiere at N.Y. auto show
Baku, April 5 (AZERTAC). Automakers, including Detroit`s Big Three, will make more than 30 worldwide introductions of models during the New York International Auto Show this week. The offerings include long-awaited sports cars such as the SRT Viper, important new sedans like Lincoln`s MKZ and Chevrolet`s Impala, and a handful of concepts.
The show is at the epicenter of the largest U.S. market for vehicle sales, where hundreds of thousands of new vehicles are sold annually, including many high-price luxury rides. It will attract more than 1 million visitors, thousands of automotive journalists and industry folk to the Jacob K. Javits Center. Press days are Wednesday and Thursday; public days are Friday through April 15.
General Motors Co. will have five reveals, including a worldwide first look at the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala, plus a new GMC Terrain Denali, a refreshed Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and Cadillac SRX. Ford Motor Co. will show a 2013 Ford Explorer Sport. Its Lincoln brand is expected to show off a new production version of the MKZ, complete with a glass roof. Chrysler Group LLC is showing off its new made-in-Detroit SRT Viper and a refreshed Ram 1500 Pickup, while Toyota Motor Corp. will show a concept of what many people believe will be the next-generation Avalon.
GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the New York show will be big this year. The company will feature new vehicles from each of its four brands in a city known as a center for media. Analysts say one of the most important reveals is the all-new Nissan Altima. The Altima was the No. 2 car sold in the U.S. last year, behind the Toyota Camry. Nissan`s 268,981 sales of Altimas in 2011 were up 17.3 percent, according to Autodata Corp.
“It`s going to have the best fuel economy in the segment and it will even beat premium powertrains from GM and Ford,” said Dave Sullivan, manager of product analysis for AutoPacific Inc. Nissan-Renault Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn will keynote the National Automobile Dealers Association/IHS Automotive forum tonight in New York. Nissan North America Inc. will show the NV200, the May 2011 winner of New York City`s Taxi of Tomorrow competition. The small minivan-like vehicle will replace a fleet of mostly Ford Crown Victorias. Porsche will show its Cayenne diesel. The dated Hyundai Sante Fe SUV is all new for 2013. Subaru will show a refreshed Legacy, which it says will get up to 32 mpg, the best of any midsize sedan with all-wheel drive. Luxury brand Infiniti will show its new electric-vehicle. Fisker Automotive will host a live webcast event this evening, where it`s expected to reveal the Fisker Project Nina, a new electric sedan.
Edmunds.com senior analyst Michelle Krebs said the show includes many important reveals.
While the New York show was once all about luxury, automakers now use the last major North American show of the season to showcase models coming into production, said Aaron Bragman, a senior analyst with IHS Automotive.
Bragman says the new Ram 1500 pickup will be a significant reveal, as will the SRT Viper.
German automaker BMW will reveal a new M6 convertible and X1 SUV, while Lexus will show off its sixth-generation, all-new ES luxury sedan. Mercedes-Benz will show a new GLK Class, GL Class and SL65 AMG convertible.
