Azerbaijan sets out to expand energy relations with Iran, Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev said. Purchase of some 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Iran is under negotiation between the two countries. There are some options regarding the gas import from Iran. Money payment for the gas is the most beneficial option.

The Minister said gas resources should be increased to meet the gas demand in Azerbaijan. To this end, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan has prepared a special program. The program provides for purchase of additional 2 billion cubic meters of gas in 2-3 years. At the same time, associated gas production is expected to rise in the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oilfield. Shahdeniz field is believed to be put into operation this year as well. The Minister did not rule out an increase in the Russian gas prices for the CIS countries. In this case, purchase of the Iranian gas will be more efficient.
