Azerbaijan NGO forum chair: Participatory urban planning gains importance
Baku, May 17, AZERTAC
Chairman of the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum Ramil Iskandarli said participatory approaches in urban planning have become increasingly important in Azerbaijan, highlighting broader public involvement in city development and decision-making.
Speaking at the opening session of the Grassroots and Civil Society Organizations Assembly within WUF13, he said Azerbaijan’s legislation promotes citizen participation, transparency, and public consultations in urban planning processes.
Iskandarli noted that public engagement mechanisms have been applied during discussions of master plans for Baku, Ganja, and the formerly occupied city of Aghdam, with the involvement of international experts and local communities.
He also stressed the growing role of Azerbaijani civil society in climate action, sustainable urbanization, and Global South cooperation, including during COP29 hosted in Baku.
According to him, WUF13 marks another important step in strengthening cooperation between Azerbaijan’s civil society sector, UN-Habitat, and international partners on sustainable cities, climate resilience, and inclusive governance.
