Azerbaijan Parliament holds seminar on combating violence against women
Baku, May 8 (AZERTAC). The Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan Republic held a seminar dedicated to the Council of Europe Convention “On combat violence against women”, which also featured presentation of an edition for the member countries’ deputies.
Member of the Azerbaijani delegation at PACE, Chairperson of the PACE Sub-Committee on Racism and Xenophobia Sahiba Gafarova spoke of protection of the human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan, in particular, the measures taken for combating violence against women.
Gafarova said the Convention had been signed on May 11, 2011, in Istanbul, and sent to 29 countries for ratification. Four countries have already ratified it.
At her words, the Istanbul Convention includes combating violence against women, protecting the victims of violence, bringing the offenders to responsibility and other questions that shape the relevant policy in this field.
Vice-speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament Bahar Muradova spoke of the legislative achievements the country gained in this field to shape necessary legal framework on combating violence against women.
First deputy chairman of PACE Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination Jose Mendes Bota spoke of the Istanbul Convention, and what PACE had been doing to put away violence against women.
He also hailed the law on domestic violence prepared by Azerbaijan Parliament.
Speaking at the seminar, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Inter-parliamentary relations Samad Seyidov, chairperson of the MM human rights commission Rabiyyat Aslanova, MP Aytan Mustafayeva, the head of the OSCE office in Baku, Ambassador Koray Targay shares their views on the question.
