Azerbaijan, World Intellectual Property Organization sign MoU on cooperation
Baku, May 14 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Elchin Afandiyev and Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Francis Gurry have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the Government of Azerbaijan and the organization.
Speaking prior to the signing ceremony, the Azerbaijani Deputy Premier congratulated Gurry on his re-election as the WIPO Director General.
Afandiyev noted Gurry’s visit to the country would contribute to expanding cooperation between the WIPO and Azerbaijan.
The Deputy Premier noted that Azerbaijan had been closely cooperating with the World Intellectual Property Organization for about 20 years.
He hailed the state of copyright protection in Azerbaijan.
Afandiyev also provided an insight into the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
He noted that as a result of Armenia`s aggressive policy 20 per cent of the Azerbaijani lands had been occupied and over one million people became refugees and IDPs.
The Deputy Premier expressed regret over the fact that a number of cultural monuments and libraries, as well as schools and other monuments had been destroyed by Armenia.
“There was a carpet-weaving school of the people of Azerbaijan in the occupied lands. And the majority of the carpets made there were demonstrated in foreign countries as Armenian carpets.”
The Deputy Premier called it a “gross” violation of the copyright, adding a number of Azerbaijani folklore samples had been translated into Armenian and spread in the world.
Gurry lauded Azerbaijan’s supporting his re-election as the Director General of the WIPO.
He praised Azerbaijan-WIPO ties as close, saying the country had been closely involved in the organization’s activities.
Gurry pointed to “grave” consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.
The WIPO Director General said a number of measures had been taken to protect copyright in Azerbaijan.
