Azerbaijani FM meets British MPs
Baku, September 4 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has met members of the British-Azerbaijani inter-parliamentary working group and members of Foreign Affairs, Energy and Climate Change Committees at the British parliament as he is on a visit in London.
Minister Mammadyarov briefed the MPs on Azerbaijan`s socio-economic development priorities and economic achievements, the country`s strengthening international image, its bilateral and multilateral cooperation with the UK, as well as the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.
He highlighted the state of talks to find a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and drew the MPs` attention to “Armenia`s non-constructive position”.
“The Armenian armed forces must withdraw from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, which will be the first step towards settling the problem.”
On economic development of Azerbaijan, the FM said the non-oil sector “is being rapidly developed”.
He praised the current state of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom, noting the role of energy cooperation. Mammadyarov noted the existence of “huge potential” to strengthen the bilateral cooperation in non-oil sectors of economy.
Speaking on regional projects, Minister Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan was expanding regional cooperation with Turkey and Georgia. He called Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project "another contribution" to ensuring sustainable regional development apart from Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum oil and gas projects.
He said that alongside with relations with neighboring countries, developing strong cooperation with the European Union is one of the foreign policy priorities of Azerbaijan.
Christopher Pincher, head of the British-Azerbaijani inter-parliamentary working group, highlighted the activities of the group and its cooperation with the Azerbaijani parliament.
Minister Mammadyarov answered the MPs' questions regarding Azerbaijan, UK-Azerbaijan cooperation as well as current issues on the agenda of the UN Security Council.
