Azerbaijani tea presented at FAO headquarters
Baku, May 22, AZERTAC
Azerbaijan was represented at the event organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in connection with May 21—International Tea Day.
This year's event, held under the slogan "Sustaining tea, supporting communities," highlighted the contributions of tea to cultural heritage and the sustainability of agri-food systems, as well as the importance of tea-growing communities.
Speaking at the event, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said that today is not an ordinary day, but also a day of people, cultures, traditions, and communities whose lives are connected to tea.
The Director-General emphasized that tea has brought families, neighbors, friends, and nations together for generations and that it is more than just a product, but a greater value.
According to him, tea farming serves as an important source of income for millions of people, especially those living in rural areas.
He stated that along with other countries, this sector is developing in Azerbaijan and that the country has been actively participating in this initiative at the FAO for many years.
The national stand, featuring tea, honey, jam, traditional sweets, and dried fruits of Azerbaijan, attracted great interest among the participants.
The FAO Director-General visited the Azerbaijani stand and tasted national dishes.
In 2019, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring May 21 as International Tea Day, and a series of events have been held at the FAO since 2020. In addition to Azerbaijan, Türkiye, China, Canada, Russia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Kenya participated in this year's International Tea Day celebration with national stands.
The exhibition also featured the performance of musical numbers, including traditional Indonesian Angklung music and a performance by the Wuzhishan Rainforest Children's Choir from Hainan Province, China.
