Baku hosts 5th Plenary Session of TURKPA
Baku, June 13 (AZERTAC). The Fifth Plenary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries (TURKPA) has today been held in Baku.
Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ogtay Asadov made an opening speech at the session, noting the importance of the unity among the Turkic speaking states.
Asadov said TURKPA contributed to establishing and developing ties among the Turkic speaking countries in a variety of fields.
He also stressed the importance of the strengthening of the TURKPA member states, adding it will help to increase effectiveness of the organization’s work.
Mr. Asadov said: “Parliamentary members of TurkPA play an important role in economic and political life of their countries. Their combination in Assembly assists to find the way for implementation of our common aims.”
“Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic speaking countries is one of the influential regional organizations of the world. The Organization has Observatory Status at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States”, he said.
Asadov also spoke of Azerbaijan’s development path in recent years.
The Speaker highlighted the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and noted that 20 per cent of Azerbaijani lands were occupied and over 1 million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs as a result of the conflcit.
He said Azerbaijan attracts the attention of international organizations to the occupation.
Asadov thanked the Turkic speaking states for supporting Azerbaijan`s stance in this issue.
Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Kabybulla Jakupov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan Asilbek Jeenbekov and Chairman of the Turkish Grand Assembly Cemil Cicek made speeches at the event.
Following the speeches, the agenda of the plenary session was approved.
The session featured discussions on the activity of the TURKPA, the election of chairman and deputy chairman of the standing committees, a report of the international observation mission from the Turkic speaking states on the presidential election held in Azerbaijan, as well as approval of the budget of the organization for 2015.
At the session also was speaking Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary Sándor Lezsák, vice president of BSEC Necati Cetinkaya, Secretary General of the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TURKSOY) Dusen Kaseinov and others.
The Baku Declaration was adopted at the end of the session.
