Baku, May 22, AZERTAC
During the panel session on "Metropolitan Governance for Affordable Housing and Inclusive Territorial Development" held as part of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), the representative of Mali, Permanent Secretary of the Greater Bamako Metropolitan Area, Ousmane Sow, presented the urban planning and metropolitan governance model implemented in his country.
He said the city of Bamako is facing rapid urbanization, lack of infrastructure and access to housing.
It was mentioned that the high population growth rate and the informal economy are among the main factors complicating urban development.
In response to these challenges, the Malian government has established the Greater Bamako Metropolitan Area, which unites 26 administrative units, and adopted a long-term plan for development.
The program’s key priorities are ensuring access to drinking water, developing peri-urban agriculture, waste management, and the introduction of sustainable energy sources, and all the measures implemented by the government contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the more sustainable development of cities.
Permanent Secretary Ousmane Sow concluded by underlining that the metropolitan approach plays a key role in the implementation of the global urban development agenda, adding that Bamako serves as an important example in the region in this regard.
