COE ‘TO DEVELOP’ CONVENTION TO COMBAT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Baku, May 24 (AZERTAC). The Council of Europe is working out to develop a convention on fighting violence against women, the organization`s Deputy Secretary General has said in Baku.
Maud de Boer-Buquicchio spoke to journalists following the 7th conference of European Ministers responsible for Equality between Women and Men, under the theme “Gender equality: bridging the gap between de jure and de facto gender equality”.
De Boer-Buquicchio said the convention would be ready till the end of the year.
Touching upon “great importance” of the conference, De Boer-Buquicchio said the event aimed to assess the situation with the gender equality and define ways to solve problems in this regard.
In response to a question about women IDPs and refugees from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Council of Europe`s Deputy Secretary General said refugees and IDPs need much more support as their rights were violated to the largest extent.
Chairperson of Azerbaijan`s state committee for family, women and children affairs Hijran Huseynova highlighted the significance of the conference, saying “choosing Azerbaijan as the host for this event is not accidental”.
“This proves that enormous efforts have been made in Azerbaijan to ensure the gender balance.”
Huseynova also touched upon the Azeri women`s involvement in public administration, praising their participation in last municipal elections.
