European MP: Armenia must withdraw from occupied territories of Azerbaijan
Baku, August 14 (AZERTAC). “In its two resolutions dating back to April 30, 1993, the United Nations demand from Armenia to withdraw its troops from occupied lands of Azerbaijan. Next resolutions also reiterated this demand. Therefore, the first step must be taken by Armenia. Armenia must withdraw from occupied territories of Azerbaijan,” said Catalin Sorin Ivan, member of Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament from Romania in his response to a request of the European Azerbaijan Society on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The Romanian MP said internally displaced persons (IDPs) had the right to return back home. “The resolutions of the United Nations clearly say that Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts belong to Azerbaijan. If these resolutions are fulfilled, IDPs can return to their native regions.”
Mr Ivan said the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was a big impediment to Europe`s neighborhood policy in the South Caucasus. “The Eastern Partnership can be a success only when countries have friendly relations. Therefore Armenians must put an end to the policy of occupation as soon as possible.”
The Romanian MP said: “Despite a will by the conflicting sides to go to negations is a key question, however, mediators also play an important role here. Both Azerbaijan and Armenia are members of the OSCE. Besides, the European Union has a special representation in the South Caucasus. The most important factor to start new peace talks is a withdrawal of Armenia from the occupied territories.”
