Japan, Azerbaijan discuss establishment of military cooperation
Baku, August 25 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan and Japan have discussed the establishment of cooperation in the field of military as Azerbaijan`s defense minister Safar Abiyev met a Japanese delegation led by vice-minister of defense Masahisa Sato.
Abiyev noted cultural and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Japan were rapidly developing in recent years. The Azerbaijani minister said the establishment of cooperation in the field of military would contribute to deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Noting that the first visit of the Japanese delegation to Azerbaijan is of great importance, Abiyev briefed them on the political and military situation in the region and the Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
He said that Armenia is still continuing its aggressive policy. “Though it is preferred to solve the problem within the OSCE Minsk Group, unfortunately, no concrete results have been produced. One of the factors that causes concern is that the four resolutions of the UN Security Council have not been fulfilled yet. Taking into account the fact that the US Congress has not repealed Section 907, we will see what tensions are going on in the region.”
The Minister noted that if the situation continues this way, Azerbaijan will be obliged to use the army.
Masahisa Sato stressed the importance of the Azerbaijan-Japan cooperation. He hailed the participation of the Azerbaijani armed forces in the peacekeeping missions.
During the meeting, they also agreed to work on the draft agreement on bilateral military cooperation.
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Japan Gursel Ismayilzade and Japanese Ambassador to Azerbaijan Shusuke Watanabe were present at the meeting.
