My wife and I join you and your countrymen in grieving at the death of President Heydar Aliyev. He was truly an outstanding international statesman and a historic national leader. He laid down the foundations for the consolidation of Azerbaijan’s independence for the promotion of its prosperity and for the country’s democratisation.
He was determined farsighted and clear-minded. We both enjoyed his gracious hospitality and were honoured to have had him and you as guests at our home. For me personally encounters with his provided a unique opportunity for forging a strategic bond between Azerbaijan and America, in addition also to fascinating private conversations about various and often previously unknown aspects of Soviet history.
To you as his son, we extend our genuine sympathy at the loss of a father who was as proud of you as you must be of him. We wish you well in following in his footsteps.
