Role of parliaments in the development of Azerbaijan-Iraq relations discussed

On June 25, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Adnan Faihan, First Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives of the Republic of Iraq, who is visiting Azerbaijan to participate in the 20th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States.
During the conversation, it was highlighted that there are broad opportunities for the development of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, investment, tourism, and other areas.
Sahiba Gafarova noted that relations between Azerbaijan and Iraq are based on the common religious and cultural values of their peoples. She stated that Azerbaijan and Iraq consistently demonstrate mutual support within the United Nations (UN), the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The sides emphasized the importance of cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries both on a bilateral basis and within international organizations. In this regard, they described the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN), established on the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, as an important platform. The importance of mutual support was also highlighted within other international platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC).
The First Deputy Speaker congratulated Azerbaijan on the successful organization of the 20th Session of the PUIC and on assuming the chairmanship of the organization. He emphasized the significance of cooperation within this framework.
He stated that his country is interested in further strengthening relations with Azerbaijan and highlighted the role of parliaments in this process.
He noted that the topics discussed at the session contribute to addressing issues of concern to the Islamic world in the modern era and that the event helps strengthen cooperation among the member countries of the organization.
