STRONG EARTHQUAKES HIT INDONESIAN PROVINCE OF PAPUA
Baku, June 16 (AZERTAC). Two strong earthquakes have hit off the Indonesian province of Papua, prompting a tsunami warning to be issued for the local area. The first earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4. The second, which struck 10 minutes later, measured 7.1. Residents said the earthquake struck in the morning causing panic, but there were no initial reports of damage. The US Geological survey said the earthquake was centered 88 miles beneath the ocean floor. Papua is the largest province of Indonesia. It comprises most of the western half of the island of New Guinea. Papua New Guinea comprises the eastern half of the island.
