Swedish Global Bar Magazine highlights upcoming Baku-hosted WUF13 forum
Stockholm, May 14, AZERTAC
Sweden’s Global Bar Magazine has published an article by Zaur Ahmadov, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Sweden, highlighting the critical role of sustainable urban development in achieving global climate goals and the significance of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), scheduled to take place in Baku on May 17–22.
The Azerbaijani diplomat underscored the intrinsic connection between the COP29 conference held in Azerbaijan and the upcoming WUF13 session. He emphasized that addressing climate challenges is impossible without discussing sustainable urban planning, as cities play a central role in energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, housing policy, and climate change adaptation.
The article noted that rapid urbanization, the global housing crisis, and the impacts of climate change make the concept of sustainable cities particularly relevant for both developing nations and European countries. Ahmadov stressed that this topic is especially pertinent for Sweden. “Swedish initiatives such as Viable Cities and Vinnova (Sweden’s Innovation Agency), along with collaborations with institutions like the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Lund University, demonstrate how climate-neutral cities can be developed through innovation and a systemic approach,” the Ambassador noted.
The report further explored the deep historical and contemporary ties between Sweden and Azerbaijan. It shed light on the activities of the Nobel brothers—Robert, Ludwig, and Alfred – who significantly contributed to the development of Baku's oil industry and the establishment of the Branobel Company in the 19th century. The Ambassador also highlighted the introduction of technological innovations in Baku pioneered by Swedish expertise, including the Zoroaster (the world's first modern oil tanker), the construction of early pipelines, and the laying of telephone lines by Ericsson.
Subsequently, the Ambassador touched upon current areas of bilateral cooperation. He noted that representatives from Azerbaijan’s Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA) recently visited Stockholm to study the experience of Smart City Sweden and other organizations regarding the “smart city” concept.
In conclusion, Ahmadov noted that hosting WUF13 in Baku would provide a vital international platform to address the future of cities, social integration, innovation, and sustainable development amid pressing global challenges.
