Baku, April 20 (AZERTAC). Open debates on women, peace and security have been held in the UN Security Council under the chairmanship of Rwanda`s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Louise Mushikiwabo.
Speakers at the debates include the UN Secretary General, representatives of all member states of the Security Council, 40 countries, NGOs on women, peace and security as well as United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zainab Bangura.
The participants discussed the Secretary-General`s report on sexual violence in conflict dated 14 March, 2013.
Azerbaijan`s permanent representative to the UN Agshin Mehdiyev said all sides of conflicts must fulfill their obligations to respect international humanitarian law and human rights. He said the Azerbaijani government resolutely condemns sexual violence in conflict, adding the world community must take a zero-tolerance approach towards such acts. Mehdiyev pointed out all necessary measures must be taken to bring offenders to justice and stop impunity of crimes. The ambassador underlined the necessity of the fact that the world community must take a firm stand on violation of international law and human rights. He added more effective steps must be taken to remove impunity. Mehdiyev also said the fact that offenders remain unpunished does not serve peace and brings to violation of principles of justice.
