UNFPA, Azerbaijan Ombudsman discuss population questions
Baku, April 27 (AZERTAC). UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund in cooperation with the Ombudsman's Office of the Azerbaijan Republic organized national discussions on the dynamics of the population in the country.
To this end, a meeting was held on the results of series of earlier discussions.
Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova noted that the approach of 2015, being the last reporting period of the Millennium Development Goals, makes necessary to define a new international strategy to ensure sustainability of the reached achievements. Azerbaijan is among the countries where appropriate national debates are underway. Conducted for this purpose the national dialogue was organized in accordance with the provisions of the Concept of “Azerbaijan - 2020: a look into the future.” Consultations across the country, started in June last year, will continue until June of this year.
UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Antonius Broek said that meetings held along with the fact that they create the conditions for sustainable development planning, will help the formation of Azerbaijan's position in the definition of the Global Development Program, provided for the period after 2015. The outcome of the discussions was the adoption of a number of recommendations on the progress made in reproductive health, population dynamics, aging, internal migration and gender barriers to emerging and existing problems. The above mentioned recommendations will be included in the report that the UN Secretary General will present at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, to be held in September this year.
The event with the participation of representatives of government and civil society discussions were held on the topic, and made certain proposals.
