Unplanned urban development increases risks of natural disasters, says expert
Baku, May 21, AZERTAC
Unplanned and chaotic urban development without consideration for environmental and territorial characteristics increases the risks of natural disasters and heightens the vulnerability of populations. Therefore, urban planning should take into account not only development needs, but also the potential consequences for the environment and public safety, Rohit Jigyasu, an Indian architect-restorer and risk management specialist, said in an interview with AZERTAC.
Rohit Jigyasu is regarded as one of the world’s leading experts in the protection of cultural heritage from natural disasters and climate change. Currently, he serves as Program Manager at ICCROM and previously headed the UNESCO Chair at Ritsumeikan University.
According to him, one of the main problems facing modern cities is the lack of a comprehensive approach to territorial development. He noted that ignoring the interconnection between people, nature, and the urban environment leads to increased risks of floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.
The expert emphasized that climate change is further aggravating the situation. He stated that in many regions of the world, both the frequency and intensity of precipitation are increasing, making flooding an increasingly serious problem. In this regard, he called for greater attention to sustainable and environmentally oriented urban development.
