World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue addresses tourism issues
Baku, May 31 (AZERTAC). A workshop entitled “Tourism as a key driver of mutual understanding and tolerance among peoples and cultures” was held as part of the 2nd World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue.
The session was moderated by Francesco Frangialli, President of the ST-EP Foundation and former Secretary-General of UNWTO.
Katérina Stenou, Director, Intersectoral Platform for a Culture of Peace and NonViolence, UNESCO, said that tourism helps to establish friendship among people. According to her, tourism has enormous potential for improving people`s welfare.
Jafar Jafari, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, the USA, Founding Editor of Annals of Tourism Research and Chief Editor of the Tourism Social Sciences, said Islamic countries have huge opportunities for development of tourism. He noted it possible to use it to establish dialogue with the Islamic culture.
Tijuana Haddad, President of the International Federation of Journalists and Travel Writers (FIJET) and former Minister of Tourism of Tunisia, noted tourism is the big source of revenue for many countries. Haddad added that sustainable development of tourism boosts other sectors of economy too.
Jafar Jafarov, Rector of the Azerbaijan Tourism Institute, spoke of the progress achieved in tourism teaching in the country. The Rector said Azerbaijan made a huge contribution to the world culture. He noted that the tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in Azerbaijan.
Also speaking at the meeting were Peter Keller, Professor for International Economics in Tourism, Head of the Unit for Research in Tourism, Ecole des HEC, University of Lausanne, Switzerland, Penelope Denu, Director, European Institute of Cultural Routes, and Executive Secretary, Council of Europe Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes.
