WUF13: Roundtable on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held
Baku, May 20, AZERTAC
A roundtable on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held within the framework of the 13th Session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13).
The event, entitled "Beyond Accessibility: Realizing the Right to Adequate Housing for all", discussed the issues of forming an inclusive and accessible urban environment for persons with disabilities.
Mikaela Patrick, moderator of the event, noted that under the conditions of rapid urbanization, cities built without universal design principles create long-term barriers for approximately 16 percent of the world's population. According to her, this situation leads to both social exclusion and subsequent reconstruction work that requires high financial costs.
It was noted that although the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the New Urban Agenda identify inclusive urban development as a priority, there are still serious gaps in practical implementation mechanisms. For this reason, persons with disabilities are among the groups most affected by housing problems and climate change emergencies.
The roundtable brought together organizations of persons with disabilities, government agencies, UN agencies, urban planning experts and international partners. The discussions highlighted how inclusive design and innovation can contribute to providing affordable and affordable housing, increasing the resilience of informal settlements, and systematically implementing inclusive infrastructure solutions.
