28th FAO European Regional Conference kicks off in Baku
Baku, April 19 (AZERTAC). The 28th Regional Conference for Europe (ERC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has today started in Azerbaijan`s capital.
The two-day event is hosted by the Azerbaijan Ministry of Agriculture.
The aim of the regional conference is to endorse Programme of Work and Budget for 2012-2013 and Areas of Priority Action for the Region for the Biennium 2014-15.
The participants discussed fight against hunger and food insecurity.
Azerbaijani Minister of Agriculture Ismat Abbasov spoke of President Ilham Aliyev`s attention to the country`s economy, including agricultural sector. The Azerbaijani government has done a lot to ensure food security in the last few years. Azerbaijan has become a donor country to ensure food security and finance fight against hunger within FAO. The conference brings together representatives from 46 countries.
Speaking at the event, Director-General of FAO Jose Graziano da Silva stressed the importance of joint struggle against hunger and food insecurity. He stated that the Baku conference opens great opportunities for establishing dialogue and cooperation in this front. He added interregional cooperation among the developing and developed countries plays an important role in the fight against hunger.
Other speakers thanked the Azerbaijani side for the well organized conference, and hailed Azerbaijan`s development in all fields.
The participants underscored the importance of assisting small-scale farmers in strengthening the food security, and highlighted that 2014 will be the Year of Family Farming.
