Azerbaijan to prevent recognition of so-called “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic”
Baku, May 19 (AZERTAC). Armenia media has disseminated “sensational information” as though the United States has recognized the so-called “Nagorno Karabakh Republic”.
Through the efforts of the diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan in the U.S. and Azerbaijani community of this country, attempts of the Armenians to achieve recognition of the so-called “Nagorno-Karabakh Republic” will be prevented, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev said on Friday.
“This is a lie and misleads the world community and has no ground”, Abdullayev underlined.
“The U.S. Administration at various levels has officially stated that it supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and does not recognize the so-called Nagorno Karabakh state”, Abdullayev said.
He said the Azerbaijani diplomacy in conjunction with the community will prevent these attempts, and inform the world community about the realities of Azerbaijan and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“Through this dissemination, Armenia attempts to deceive the world”, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesman stressed.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding regions.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France and the U.S. - are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
