AZERI PARLIAMENT OFFICIAL MEETS UN SECRETARY GENERAL`s REPRESENTATIVE
Baku, May 22 (AZERTAC). Chairwoman of the Azerbaijan Parliament`s committee for human rights Rabiyyat Aslanova has met visiting representative of the UN Secretary General on the human rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs) Walter Kalin.
They discussed a wide range of issues, including cooperation between Azerbaijan and UN, problems of refugees and IDPs and settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Aslanova briefed Kalin on what the Azerbaijani government had done to strengthen the protection of human rights and solve problems of refugees and IDPs. “But it is impossible to completely solve problems of IDPs unless the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is settled,” she said.
Aslanova underlined all international organizations, including UN should increase efforts towards settling the conflict.
Kalin, in turn, praised the work done by the Azerbaijan government to improve the living conditions of refugees and IDPs.
He joined the Azeri parliament official in stressing the necessity of settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict “in order to completely solve problems of IDPs”.
He expressed hope that the conflict would be resolved soon by peaceful means.
Kalin also hailed the fact that the Azerbaijani government had taken into account the recommendations he made during his 2007 visit to Baku.
Attending the meeting, MPs Havva Mammadova and Fazil Mustafa highlighted legal aspects of settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
