BP TO CREATE NEW SAFETY DIVISION
Baku, September 29 (AZERTAC). The incoming chief executive of oil company BP says he is creating a new safety division within the company after its massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill earlier this year.
In a statement Wednesday, incoming CEO Bob Dudley announced the creation of a safety and operational risk unit, which he says will have the authority to intervene in all aspects of the company`s technical activities.
Dudley said the Deepwater Horizon accident provided lessons for the company in the way it operates, the way it is organized and the way it manages risk.
He said the changes are part of his effort to rebuild trust in BP.
Dudley is scheduled to take over as the company`s chief on Friday.
A explosion on an oil rig at a BP-leased oil well in April killed 11 workers and led to the worst oil spill in U.S. history.
Millions of barrels of oil leaked from the damaged well, polluting the fragile southern U.S. coastline, damaging the region`s fishing and tourism industry.
The well was pronounced permanently sealed September 19.
BP officials say they are continuing to determine why the oil rig exploded.
