Conference on Nagorno Karabakh conflict held at European Parliament
Baku, April 20 (AZERTAC). A conference on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and humanitarian sides of the problem was held at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels.
The conference, held under the leadership of Romanian member of the European Parliament, Norica Nicolai, focused on settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, ensuring peace and stability in the South Caucasus region.
Nicolai said she had visited Azerbaijan several times, got acquainted with the difficult conditions of refugees and IDPs.
She said: “I witnessed their hard living conditions and saw that all of them wished to return to their native lands. This is a big human tragedy and we must find its solution, we must attach more importance to the discussions of such serious issues.”
Former member of the Belgian parliament and judge of the country`s Constitutional Court Jean-Paul Murman spoke of the problem`s legal aspects.
Touching upon the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council in 1993, Murman particularly underlined the resolution № 853 which demands recognition of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity, calling of Armenia occupier and return of the IDPs to their native lands.
The Belgian judge also said the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenian armed forces was reflected in the resolution №1415 adopted by the PACE in 2005.
Murman put forward two proposals concerning refugees and IDPs. He proposed to establish an international foundation which will engage in paying compensation to refugees, establish an international court for investigation of the problem of refugees and imposition of sanctions against culprits.
Member of the European Parliament`s foreign affairs committee, Slovenian Ivo Vajgl touched upon the political and diplomatic sides of the problem. He noted Armenians must understand that the norms of the international law must be accepted. The European Parliament and European institutions must demonstrate activeness in the solution of this problem.
Answering the speeches of Armenian and pro-Armenian participants, Ivo Vajgl said he did not hear anything new in their speeches, adding these remarks consist of the repeated claims of the Armenian side.
