FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH SWISS COUNTERPART
Minister Mammadyarov informed his Swiss counterpart on the course of the peace talks over the Armenia – Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which threatening peace and stability in the region. He said that the Azerbaijani cultural monuments are destroyed in both Armenia and occupied territories.
Touching on the existing level of Azerbaijan-Switzerland economic cooperation, the Azeri Minister pointed to low trade turnover between the two countries but expressed hope it would be increased in the future.
He also informed Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey about the large-scale energy projects being implemented in Azerbaijan including the construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipelines, and outlined the measures being undertaking for development of non-oil sector in the country.
Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey pointed out the necessity to enhance economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Switzerland, and in this context, underlined the importance the documents to be signed during her visit.
Touching upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorny Karabakh, the Foreign Minister of Switzerland said that her country supports peaceful settlement of the problem and is ready for brokering the negotiations between the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Existing possibilities for expanding political and humanitarian cooperation between Azerbaijan and Switzerland were also discussed during the meeting.
The Swiss Minister mentioned Azerbaijan’s successful cooperation with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as well as expressed her country’s concernment to open its diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan.
The parties finally signed the “Joint Statement by The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland on migration.”
