“Le Monde”: Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant threat for entire region
Baku, April 21 (AZERTAC). The government of Armenia stated that the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) would function till 2020, the French “Le Monde” reported, adding also that the station was built in seismically dangerous zone.
According to the newspaper, the premier of Armenia Tigran Sarkisian said the nuclear power station would operate to ensure the country’s energy safety and up to construction of a new reactor.
The AES is located in the seismoactive zone and presents danger for all countries of the South Caucasus, the experts say.
The station is situated 30 km from the borders of Turkey and the devastating earthquake of 1988 killed some 25 thousand people.
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (INEA) inspected the station. The United States and the European Union have repeatedly criticized operation of the station.
