Meeting of PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights conducted
Strasbourg, January 26 (AZERTAC). A meeting of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights has been held as part of the winter session of Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly.
The issue on “political prisoners” in Azerbaijan was discussed at the meeting.
Head of the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE Samad Seyidov in his interview to AZERTAC said along with Committee`s members, members of NGO`s and human rights defenders attended the discussions.
According to Samad Seyidov main point of discussions was impossibility of continuing non-objective position against Azerbaijan: “It was clarified that, non-objective position can influence on Azerbaijan-European Council negatively. Therefore, it`s not right to exert pressure on Azerbaijan using the “political prisoner” issue, distinguishing Azerbaijan from other countries and realize measures on it. This idea was supported by most members of committee. I consider that, this issue will be discussed at the next meeting of Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, more strictly. Today, Azerbaijani President`s policy is directed to human rights and their defense. I think PACE deputies get information about issues on human rights. Therefore, today`s discussions were held normally”.
