MM DEPUTY SPEAKER MEETS WITH PACE PRE-ELECTORAL DELEGATION
Ziyafet Askarov updated delegation members on the run-up to the partial re-run of the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan slated for 13 May 2006. He noted the constitution of Azerbaijan guarantees protection of political and electoral rights of people. Azerbaijan state, government and parliament attach a particular interest to re-run of parliamentary election. Just like it was done during November 2005 elections, this political action will be conducted in an absolutely free, democratic and transparent atmosphere with electoral rights of people ensured.
Then, Z. Askarov told of the progressive steps taken towards conducting high-level elections in line with European standards, improvement of the laws and presidential elections-related ordinances.
Then, head of the PACE pre-electoral mission Leo Platvoet expressed gratitude for the information provided and reported on the aims of the visit. According to him, the aim of the visit is to get acquitted with the run-up to the partial re-run of parliamentary elections and see how Azerbaijan government implements COE recommendations.
Then, the discussions at the meeting addressed integration of Azerbaijan into EuroAtlantic structures, prospects of relationship between Azerbaijan and international organizations.
